Cesar Chavez
En Delano, Cesar Chavez wasn’t some guy we saw on T.V. Cesar was our neighbor, our mentor, a leader with vision. You wanted to see Cesar, you would head to the Cuarenta Acres (the forty acres) and thats where he was. I was young when he was fasting. They had to carry him in for a speech he was going to give. Lou Diamond Phillips was there, Edward James Olmos too. (kinda just rambling so bare with me…)
We lived and breathed la huelga. We had signs in our homes, we wore buttons, picketted, and I grew an aversion to grapes. To this day I still cannot eat table grapes.
